OBASEKI – AND THE STRATEGIC PERMUTATIONS
By Bar. Kenneth Ikonne
Pretend as we may, it must be cause for worry for many in Oshiomhole’s camp that President Buhari agreed at all to receive Obaseki at the Villa. For the signals emanating from the Presidency, and several other critical points within the APC itself, make the upcoming Edo governorship election a bit difficult to call.
Nevertheless, it is important to keep in view the reason for the epic clash between Obaseki and Oshiomhole. First, for Oshiomhole, and the faction he represents in the APC, the fight is not fundamentally about who becomes Governor of Edo State after the forthcoming election. Even though the APC will strenuously try to ensure that Obaseki is not re – elected, that, for Oshiomhole, and Tinubu, is a secondary – and distant – consideration. The primary consideration for the fight is to ensure that even if Obaseki is re – elected, it won’t be on the platform of the APC, where forces hitherto led by the late Abba Kyari, and intent on unhinging Tinubu’s presidential ambition, were using Obaseki as a pawn to upstage Tinubu by removing his protege, Oshiomhole, as National Chairman of the APC.
That plot was dealt a fatal blow by Kyari’s unexpected passing, but the forces will certainly regroup in the run-up to 2023. That is why, for Tinubu and Oshiomhole, it will be dangerous to re – elect Obaseki on the platform of the APC, where he will, in due course, re – launch the plot, by, for instance, re – instigating Oshiomhole’s expulsion from the party at ward level. For now, with Obaseki’s disqualification, and his resignation from the APC, the Tinubu faction has achieved its immediate objective.
What remains to be seen is whether those external forces that once gave Obaseki impetus will now finally sacrifice him and let his humiliation become complete, or whether a re – elected Obaseki in the APC National Chairman’s state, even if on the platform of another party, could still be of strategic value as we gallop towards 2023. These considerations are bound to be decisive as Edo decides in September!
